Frank Joughin and Jamie Smith are a father-son duo from Peel. Frank, who is 17, has always been enthusiastic in playing Manx music and spreading Manx culture, which he does through the various folk groups he is involved in. Recently Frank performed with Manx youth band Scran at the Villa Marina, playing predominantly Manx music and also performing with supporting acts, Skeddan Jiarg and Skeealyn Vannin. Last year Scran also performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London for the Music For Youth Proms; this represented a huge achievement for the group, giving them the opportunity to perform Manx traditional tunes and songs to thousands of people who likely had never heard them before. Frank and Jamie are always looking to push the boundaries when it comes to Manx music, through dynamic, engaging arrangements and giving attention to tunes that are lesser known in the Manx music scene. This was something that Jamie has had his fair share of experience in, having been a member of the trio Barrule, which were influential in pushing Manx music forward. Today Frank is continuing the push: he is currently working on a new album that pairs traditional Manx music and language with modern production styles, exploring new ways to perform and use trad music that have never been done before.
